Platforms/Versions

Color Finesse 2.1 or later on Windows using NVIDIA video card and Forceware driver software.

Problem

When the Color Finesse plug-in is in use and the Full UI button is clicked, a crash of the Color Finesse application occurs.

This problem is caused by an incompatibility between Apple QuickTime and the NVIDIA Forceware software, apparently starting with version 98.x. Color Finesse makes use of QuickTime to access different file formats and when it attempts to initialize QuickTime, a crash occurs causing Color Finesse to quit. The host application is unaffected, but it's not possible to access the full UI. Many applications besides Color Finesse are affected by this incompatibility.

Solution

This problem has been resolved in ForceWare version 169.96 and later. You can download the updated ForceWare software from the NVIDIA driver downloads page. Once you have installed the update and restarted your computer the Color Finesse UI should launch without problems.

Avid users should read this Avid Knowledge Base article regarding compatibility of this Forceware update and Avid software.

If you are unable to use the updated Forceware—perhaps because of compatibility with other software—you can avoid the crash by disabling video acceleration using the QuickTime settings. Access those settings via the QuickTime control panel (under Windows XP) or through QuickTime Player (under Windows Vista).

Select the Advanced tab. Within the Video section, select the Safe Mode (GDI only) radio button. Click OK. You should now be able use the Color Finesse plugin to enter the Full UI.
