Problem

When the Color Finesse plug-in is in use and the Full UI button is clicked, the Color Finesse UI fails to launch with the error message "Unable to acquire sufficient shared memory."

Color Finesse uses "shared memory" to communicate between the plug-in and full UI application. Shared memory is a limited system resource, with just 4 MB allocated to all applications for each user.

When Color Finesse requests shared memory and is denied the request due to insufficient shared memory, Color Finesse reduces its request and tries again. This process is repeated until the amount of memory requested is too small for Color Finesse to use. In this case the error message is displayed and the full UI does not launch.

In the early days of Mac OS X there were a number of applications which used up virtually all shared memory, ignoring the fact there may be other apps being used. Fortunately, these days most applications are better behaved and this problem now rarely occurs. However, there are still a few misbehaving applications around which hog the available shared memory.

Solution

If you can identify the application which is consuming too much shared memory, the best approach is to contact the application author and have the problem fixed.

Since that is not always possible, it may be necessary to increase the amount of shared memory available on the system. This requires telling Mac OS X to increase the amount of memory to reserve for shared memory.

A procedure for doing this is described in the document Configuring Shared Memory on Mac OS X available on the Spy Hill Research web site. This should be considered an advanced solution to the problem and should be attempted only if you're comfortable with editing system files and the terminal application.
