This article applies to Color Finesse 1.5 on Mac OS X systems.

Problem

Color Finesse 1.5 installation on OS X fails to complete and displays the message "System error occurred: -43."

This error indicates a permissions problem and occurs because of one of two conditions:

  • The person running the Color Finesse installer does not have permission to create or write into folders Color Finesse needs to install software into.

  • Read/write permissions on the system need to be repaired.

Solution

Here are several steps you can follow to correct this problem so that Color Finesse can finish the installation:

  1. First, make sure you've logged in as an admin user and try to run the installer again.

  2. If that doesn't let the installer complete, the next thing to do is to Repair Permissions, then try the installer again. If it still fails, you can manually repair permissions as described below and then run the installer again.

Manually Repairing Folder Permissions

Here are the files and paths that Color Finesse installs for the system, AE, and FCP installations. If they are already present on your system, then that part of the installation went OK. If they are missing, check the permissions on the folder they are being installed into to make sure that you have write permissions to the folder. If not, change the permissions to allow you to write to that folder and re-run the Color Finesse installer.

/Applications/Color Finesse(tm)/
/Applications/Adobe After Effects x.x/Plug-ins/Synthetic Aperture/
/Library/Application Support/Synthetic Aperture/
/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins/Synthetic Aperture/

To change permissions on a folder, select the folder in the Finder and do a Get Info (command + I). Twirl down Ownership and Permissions. If it says "You can Read & Write" then you are OK. If not, twirl down Details. Click on the lock and enter your admin password if requested. Change the Owner to your login ID. Change the Group to "admin" and Access to "Read & Write." Change the Owner back.
