Platforms/Versions

Color Finesse 2.1 or later on Windows using nVidia video card and Forceware driver software.

Problem

When the Color Finesse plug-in is in use and the Full UI button is clicked, a crash of the Color Finesse application occurs.

This problem is caused by an incompatibility between Apple QuickTime and the nVidia Forceware software, apparently starting with version 98.x. Color Finesse makes use of QuickTime to access different file formats and when it attempts to initialize QuickTime, a crash occurs causing Color Finesse to quit. The host application is unaffected, but it's not possible to access the full UI. Many applications besides Color Finesse are affected by this incompatibility.

QuickTime 7.2 seems to have made the problem worse, but reverting to an earlier version of QuickTime does not seem to fix the problem.

Solution

As of the writing of this document, there is no actual software fix available. There is, however, a workaround which will get things working.

The surest way to resolve the problem is to disable video acceleration using the QuickTime settings. Access those settings via the QuickTime control panel (under Windows XP) or through QuickTime Player (under Windows Vista).

Select the Advanced tab. Within the Video section, select the Safe Mode (GDI only) radio button. Click OK. You should now be able use the Color Finesse plugin to enter the Full UI.

A driver fix from nVidia is expected soon. As of the writing of this document the problem still exists within Forceware version 163.71.
